Be prepared to have your socks blown off.  This spicy ginger, lemon and cinnamon non-alcoholic martini is a perfect aperitif for those who like their drinks strong and sour.  This martini packs a punch without the need for any spirits.

The ginger shot is a crucial ingredient for this recipe, You can buy the juice in most supermarkets or make it yourself.

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz. (60 ml) ginger shot
  • 1/2 oz. (15 ml) freshly squeezed lemon juice (approximately half a small lemon)
  • 1.5 oz. (45 ml) apple juice
  • 1/2 oz. (15 ml) cinnamon sugar syrup (see below)
  • Ice

For the cinnamon syrup

  • 4 oz. (120 ml) granulated sugar
  • 4 oz. (120 ml) water
  • ½  stick of cinnamon

Equipment:

  • Small saucepan
  • Citrus juicer
  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger or measuring spoons
  • Martini glass

Instructions:

  • First, make the cinnamon sugar syrup.  
  • Crumble the cinnamon stick into a small saucepan with the sugar and water.  Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally, before reducing to a simmer.
  • Gently cook for 10 minutes.
  • Remove from the heat and cover with a lid.  Allow the syrup to cool to room temperature before straining the liquid through a fine mesh sieve.
  • Pour the liquid into an airtight glass bottle or container.  The syrup can be kept in the fridge for up to a month.
  • Next, assemble the mocktail.
  • In a cocktail shaker, add the ginger, lemon and apple juice along with the cooled cinnamon syrup.
  • Add a generous handful of ice and shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker is cold – around 10 to 15 seconds.
  • Pour straight up into a martini glass.
  • Garnish with a piece of fresh ginger, curl of lemon peel, and/or cinnamon stick (optional).

Bartender Tip:  To add another layer of lemon fragrance to the drink, use a lighter or match to set light to the lemon peel garnish (before quickly extinguishing) to release its essential oils.  Run the peel around the rim of the glass before dropping it into the drink.
